1st US Backgammon Open

American Backgammon Tour, World Backgammon Association and North American top backgammon players are celebrating the success of the first ever US Open backgammon tournament held last weekend in Washington DC. The championship was won by Carol Joy Cole who was finalized by Joe Russell, while Brian B. Smith bested the Consolation flight and Richard Munitz the Last Chance.

25 backgammon players attended the US Backgammon Open main competition and about 30 more played the intermediate and beginners divisions. The 4-days tournament, commenced on Thursday, June 4th and ended on Sunday, June 7th, was organized and directed by Chiva Tafazzoli, who usually resides in Germany, where he runs the World Backgammon Association, an international backgammon organization that governs, among other events, the European Backgammon Tour.

The 1st US Backgammon Open was championed by Carol Joy Cole, the director of the Flint Area Backgammon Club, and one of the top women backgammon players in America and worldwide, number 18 in ABT player of the year 2009. Other winners include Bill Davis, the veteran director of the Chicago based backgammon club Bar Point Club, known for its chouettes and championship level tournaments, who won the special WBA Member of Honor for his lifetime achievement, and Ray Fogerlund and Austrian player Werner Schmucki who each won a special trophy.
