2009 Midwest Backgammon Championships Results
Julius High won the 2009 ABT Midwest Backgammon Championships, held on the weekend of March 20-22 at the Wyndham Lisle Hotel in Illinois. The Grand Crystal Beaver trophy was taken home by Steve Sax, together with a $5300 check while the second finisher, Rod Colvin flew back to New York with $3340. The Children Tourney was won, for the fourth time, by 12 years old Lyle Rubin, whose father, David Rubin, championed the 1st Consolation Division at the main event.
ABT Midwest Backgammon Championships, taking place annually since 1984, is complied of a row of unique events. It is one of the few ABT tournaments that allow backgammon players to show off their nackgammon skills and due to the relatively great attendance of women, a rare "Battle of the Sexes" tourney can take place. This year, though 32 women were registered (and 32 men in their fifties - do the Midwest Backgammon Championships TD think that young male would be so distracted from the presence of female players that they would disgrace their entire gender?), only 11 women competed against 32 opposite gender opponents. The winner, by the way, was Alan Gold, a made up of men to the best of my knowledge.
This year's backgammon tournament was inspired by the sixties spirit, maybe to celebrate Woodstock 40th anniversary. Therefore, a Taki-groovy Bakelite backgammon board was given to the winner, Rod Calvin, in a unique tournament, which required the 16 qualifiers to solve a Flower-Power backgammon position; a 60s'/Hippies Costumes competition took place, which was finalized by the Main Event champion Mr. High, who lost number one spot to Jeff Kane who dressed up his entire family, and $4500 was donated to the Anti-Cruelty Society of Chicago, one of the largest human society in the US, helping animals since 1899 by providing them shelter, food and companionship.
