2nd US Backgammon Championship for Mary Hickey
Mary Hickey has accomplished the rare achievement of championing the same backgammon tournament for a second consecutive year. It happened at the 3rd US Backgammon Open, held last weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, almost a year after her 2nd US Backgammon Open winning.
The US Backgammon Open championship is organized by the World Backgammon Association as part of the American Backgammon Tour. This year, it saw a decline in the number of attendees - 32 in the Championship division, comparing to last year's 44; 18 in the Intermediate and only 4 in the Beginner's division. Still, local and foreign backgammon champions have filled the tables of the Marriott Hotel.
The US Backgammon Open Championship finalists include the reigning champion, Mary Hickey of Ohio, two Giants of Backgammon, Mike Corbett and Ray Fogerlund the finalist and semi finalist respectively), former World Backgammon Championship finalist, Mario Sequeira and even a World Backgammon Champion, Lee Genud, who won the Last Chance division.
