April Backgammon Tournaments Results
The 15th annual Ohio State Backgammon Championships was won by Mary Hickey, one of the most prominent
women backgammon players in the US. She championed the 30-players Open Division of the ABT event, held on April 3-5 2009, leaving behind Canadian Neil Garvie, local pro known as Stick Rice and Michigan based Frank Talbot. Neil Kazaross and Rod Calvin, who recently topped the Carolina Invitational Backgammon Tournament have ruled the Ohio Masters event, with Kazaross at number one and Calvin as the finalist.
At the same time and on the other side of the Atlantic, Jan Barnes won the 18th annual British Open, one of the oldest, most important backgammon tournaments in the UK. The backgammon event, organized by the British Isles Backgammon Association (BIBA) and sponsored by online casino and skill games website Casinorip.com, drew about 70 contestants from the UK and the rest of the globe.
Similar to the ABT Ohio State Backgammon Championships, BIBA British Open includes various competitions and events: jackpot, poker tourney and "The R.I.P." event, in which two former British Open champs, and accidentally both ladies, played a 3-points final. Unlike the Ohio tour, offering open, advanced and novice divisions, the British Open was open only to advanced level players and up. So, according to the backgammon software that analyzed Jan Barnes and Gaz Owen final match, the winner was rated a world class player while his runner up only an expert.
