2008 Los Angeles Open Backgammon Tournament
The 2008 Los Angeles Open Backgammon Tournament was held on the weekend of June 6-8, at the Airtel Plaza Hotel & Convention Center in Van Nuys, California. Number 1 in the Open Division was captured by Ray Fogerlund (no. 24 in the Giants of Backgammon), who had also won the Super 32 and took home the Super Jackpot.
Organized by the American Backgammon Tour (ABT), the Los Angeles Open Backgammon has been going for 30 years now. This year's event saw 108 players who came from Southern California or all the way from Maryland, Illinois and Ohio to participate in a weekend long backgammon event, divided into three divisions and features dozens of backgammon games and competitions.
Traditionally, the Los Angeles Open backgammon tournament is played in a double-elimination-progressive-consolation, allowing every player to take part in at least 3 backgammon matches but no more than 11. On the final match, the winner of the Open Divisions hooks up with the Second Chance frontrunner to an 11-points match, and the undefeated player among them goes home with the trophy.
However, the final match, featuring Ray Fogerlund as the Open winner and Roy Gandy of the Last Chance, was a 9-points match that consisted of 2 games. That's because the first game had evened both players' scores with one loss to each. It took a second game, in which Fogerlund outplayed Gandy 9-3 and credited a second loss to his opponent's account.
