2008 Monte Carlo World Backgammon Championship Results

The 2008 Monte Carlo World Backgammon Championship, held last week at the Farmont hotel in Monaco was won by Lars Trabolt of Denmark. Trabolt, who is known around the backgammon circuit as "Trabi" is ranked number 16 at the Giants of Backgammon list and he is the 4th backgammon player from Denmark to win the World Championship.

The 2008 World Backgammon Championship was held, for the 33rd time in the lavish location of Monaco, Monte Carlo between July 6th and July 15th. This year, the Master Division saw 199 entrants from every continent around the globe, the Intermediate Division (won by Valery Mikhaylets of Russia) hosted 58 players and the Beginners 41.

The battle on the prestigious World Backgammon Champion title was decided on Sunday when Dane Trabolt beat Portuguese Mario Sequieira 25-12 in the last 25 points match of the tournament. The Championship semi-finalists are Achim Muller of Germany and Joel Schiff of Israel. Lars Degerman of Sweden won the first Consolation contest and Neville Eber of South Africa won the second one. Tom Zarrinnam of the US captured the 1st place at the Last Chance tourney.

The Japanese winners of the Monte Carlo Backgammon Championship (Masa Nasu, who semi-finalized the first Consolation at the Championship Division, Michihito Kageyama, the runner up at the Main Last Chance, and Kenji Shimodaira & Takamitsu Suzuki who won the Doubles event) added a cosmopolitan air to the event by wearing traditional customs to the awards ceremony.
