2008 California State Backgammon Championship Results

ABT California State Backgammon Championship was championed by Nevada man Hugh Sconyers. Bob Koca of Maryland, who had almost made it to the 2008 WSOB Final in Cannes, France, finished second in this backgammon tournament too. The third and fourth places were taken by local heroes Badei Khoury and George Matthews.

California State Backgammon Championship, held in Van Nuys on the first weekend of December 2008, closed a year full of events (19!) for the American Backgammon Tour (ABT), the most pandemic backgammon tournament in the United States. After the trophies were given away to the backgammon champions of the State of California, the people of ABT could have calculate the weighted rating points of this year's tournaments' participants and to name the final top 25 ABT players of 2008.

As predicted, Neil Kazaross was named the ABT 2008 Player of the Year. Though he was absent from the leading quartet of the California State Championship Open Division, he won the Super-32, and had impressive achievements in number of ABT events, most notably championing the 33rd Michigan Summer Backgammon Championships in July. All together, Mr. Kazaross had accumulated 43.83 ABT points, while his runner up, Tim Mabee gathered total of 36 points. Bob Koca stands on number three with 34.24 points 0.02 points more than number 4 Richard Munitz. The Top 25 list is closed with Petko Kostadinov, proud collector of 13.18.

2009 will be opened with the traditional New York Metropolitan Backgammon Open, scheduled to take place between January 8 and January 11, 2009 on Jersey City, New Jersey. Entry fees are priced at $30 for Beginners, $150 for Intermediate and $400 for the Championship. The New York Metropolitan Open will include a line of side events including Seniors Tournaments for backgammon players in the 6th decade of their lives or older, New York Doubles Tournament and more.
