More on Backgammon:

  • Backgammon is a game for two players. Yet, in some variations, most known one is chouette, backgammon can be played by three players or more. The origin of the term "chouette" (pronounced shoo-et) is French for owl, the predatory bird that rips its enemies.

  • Backgammon is considered a skill game, belonging to the same family of board games as checkers, chess, go and scrabble. Backgammon skill quality, in contrast with its chance aspect, has been discussed in court several times, most famously in 1981 by an Oregon judge, ruling that backgammon is a game of skill.

  • Today's backgammon boards are usually made of wood, leather or plastic, as the rest of backgammon equipment (checkers, dice and dice cups). Plus, there are designer's backgammon board made of glass, diamonds and spare parts of Formula 1 racing car.

  • The first back gammon board, found in an archeological site in today's Iran was made of ebony wood with checkers made of precious stones. Illustrations of backgammon boards of medieval manuscripts show that the backgammon board's design – the division to four quadrants and 24 long, narrow, alternating in color triangles – has not changed since then.
