2009 Pittsburgh Backgammon Championship

Bob Glass of California won the ABT 2009 Pittsburgh Backgammon Championship held on the weekend of February 20-22, 2009 at the Holiday Inn in Moon Township. The second place was captured by 2008 ABT player of the year Neil Kazaross of Illinois, who currently maintains his position at the top of ABT ranking list, with the new Pittsburgh backgammon championship tails behind him.

The 31st annual ABT 2009 Pittsburgh Backgammon Championship was the first event held under the direction of Robert (Rob) Maier, formerly of the Indianapolis Labor Day Weekend Backgammon Tournament. Maier replaced the former tournament director, Steve Hast, who had retired last year, after the 30th anniversary of the annual backgammon event.

The 2009 Pittsburgh Backgammon Championship was opened on Thursday, February 19th with a warm up tournament, won by Bulgarian-American Petko Kostadinov and satellites, and continued with a series of tournaments and jackpots. Pittsburgh Memorial Cup was shared by Sean Garber and Stacy Turner; the Three Rivers Amateur Cup by Farhad Forudi.

63 backgammon players played the Open (championship) Division, topped by Bob Glass, Neil Kazaross, Matt Reklaitis and Herb Roman. The Open Doubles backgammon championship, with 32 teams, was won by the Joe Eckert & Neil Garvie crew. The next ABT event is the 2009 Midwest Championships, scheduled to March 20-22 at the Wyndham Lisle in Illinois.
