WSOB Cannes Season III Updates
The first stop of the World Series of Backgammon season III will take place on the Palm Beach Casino in Cannes, France on July 22-26, 2009, announced the World Series of Backgammon Enterprises founders, Andy Bell and Eric Guedj. At the same opportunity, they revealed the planned 2009 Riviera Cup schedule and the list of backgammon players who already confirmed their attendance at the backgammon event.
WSOB Season II finalist Bob Koca, US Backgammon Open 1st champion Carol Joy Cole, 2007 Giant of Backgammon Falafel Natanzon and poker superstar Gus Hansen are some of the backgammon players who are expected at the WSOB Cannes 2009. The long anticipated 6-day event will be open officially on Tuesday, July 21 with the registrations and a welcome cocktail. On the following day the Nations Cup tournament will be held, and the WSOB Cannes 2009 main event will kick off on Thursday. Entry fees to the tourney range from €180 to the intermediate side event to €1250 to the main event, registration fees are not included.
The 3rd season of the World Series of Backgammon will introduce a new tournament format; a second chance competition will replace the consolation flight, providing the winner an opportunity to hit the championship on the semi-finals. Gus Hansen, WSOB commenter will host a special Dual Discipline event, where the best poker player among the backgammon champions will be named, and the WSOB Championship draw will be expanded to 32. In addition, launch of online backgammon software was implied, but no further details were given except that it would offer especially lower rakes and exclusive satellites to the tour events in Prague and in London.
